Prophets Old and New
When Jesus Christ lived on the earth, He organized His church and called apostles to lead and teach the people. Christ gave His apostles the authority (called the priesthood) to act in His name, such as to perform baptisms.
After Christ's death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven, His apostles continued to teach His doctrine and direct His Church through revelation from Christ. After the death and martyrdom of Christ's apostles, no one with Christ's priesthood remained on the earth. There was a general falling away from the truth and Christ's church and authority were taken away. This is called the great Apostasy.
Christ Restored His Church:This apostasy lasted for hundreds of years until Christ called a new prophet, Joseph Smith, to whom He revealed His doctrine and gave His authority, the priesthood, to act in His name. Christ directed Joseph to organize and restore His church in these latter days. This is called the restoration because Christ's church, authority, and gospel were restored (returned) to the earth. more

Book Of Mormon
Joseph Smith was given by the Angel Moroni a set of gold plates which he translated by the power of God. These gold plates contained the history of an ancient civilization who lived upon the American continent and is called The Book of Mormon.
This history begins in 600 B.C. with the record of a man named Nephi, who writes: "I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days" (Book of Mormon: 1 Nephi 1:1).
In The Book of Mormon Nephi recorded an account of his father, Lehi, who as a prophet of God was commanded to leave Jerusalem with a small group of people and travel to the Americas. The people grew into a great civilization called the Nephites and were taught by men called of God to be prophets. The prophets taught the people the commandments of God, His plan of salvation, and the mission of Jesus Christ.
Over 600 years later, Jesus Christ, as a resurrected being, appeared to the people of Nephi on the American continent: "And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying: Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning" (3 Nephi 11:9-11).
In The Book of Mormon we read how Christ taught the people His gospel, organized His church among them, and called twelve disciples to lead the people after His return to Heaven. As disciples these men are also considered prophets, seers, and revelators
Almost 400 years after Christ's appearance, the Lord commanded a prophet, named Mormon, to make an abridgment of all the records of the prophets of the American continent. Mormon carved his abridgment onto plates made of gold in Reformed Egyptian, and it is he for whom The Book of Mormon is named.
The great civilization of people on the American continent became wicked, killed the prophets and all those who would not deny the Christ. There came a great apostasy, or falling away from the truth. The last prophet, Moroni the son of Mormon, was commanded to hide the gold plates in the ground where they laid undisturbed for over a thousand years. Before the plates were buried Moroni wrote a promise to us (Moroni 10:3-5) that if we would read, ponder, and pray about "these things" (The Book of Mormon) that we would know by the power of the Holy Ghost that they are true.
Then in 1823 A.D. Moroni, as a resurrected being, appeared to Joseph Smith who was called of God to be a latter-day prophet. Moroni instructed Joseph Smith where to find the gold plates, which Joseph translated and then published in 1830. The Book of Mormon also contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and is a companion to the Bible.

The basic beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are summed up in 13 simple statements penned by Joseph Smith as a response to frequent queries on the teachings and doctrines of the Church. Book Of Mormon
Joseph Smith was given by the Angel Moroni a set of gold plates which he translated by the power of God. These gold plates contained the history of an ancient civilization who lived upon the American continent and is called The Book of Mormon.
This history begins in 600 B.C. with the record of a man named Nephi, who writes: "I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days" (Book of Mormon: 1 Nephi 1:1).
In The Book of Mormon Nephi recorded an account of his father, Lehi, who as a prophet of God was commanded to leave Jerusalem with a small group of people and travel to the Americas. The people grew into a great civilization called the Nephites and were taught by men called of God to be prophets. The prophets taught the people the commandments of God, His plan of salvation, and the mission of Jesus Christ.
Over 600 years later, Jesus Christ, as a resurrected being, appeared to the people of Nephi on the American continent: "And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying: Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning" (3 Nephi 11:9-11).
In The Book of Mormon we read how Christ taught the people His gospel, organized His church among them, and called twelve disciples to lead the people after His return to Heaven. As disciples these men are also considered prophets, seers, and revelators
Almost 400 years after Christ's appearance, the Lord commanded a prophet, named Mormon, to make an abridgment of all the records of the prophets of the American continent. Mormon carved his abridgment onto plates made of gold in Reformed Egyptian, and it is he for whom The Book of Mormon is named.
The great civilization of people on the American continent became wicked, killed the prophets and all those who would not deny the Christ. There came a great apostasy, or falling away from the truth. The last prophet, Moroni the son of Mormon, was commanded to hide the gold plates in the ground where they laid undisturbed for over a thousand years. Before the plates were buried Moroni wrote a promise to us (Moroni 10:3-5) that if we would read, ponder, and pray about "these things" (The Book of Mormon) that we would know by the power of the Holy Ghost that they are true.
Then in 1823 A.D. Moroni, as a resurrected being, appeared to Joseph Smith who was called of God to be a latter-day prophet. Moroni instructed Joseph Smith where to find the gold plates, which Joseph translated and then published in 1830. The Book of Mormon also contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and is a companion to the Bible.

2. Click on the book page and find the book you want to listen to.
3. Click on the download button for the book you have chosen by whole book or by chapter. Some books cannot be downloaded as a whole book because of their size and have been divided into smaller parts.
4. Once the book is downloaded to your computer, drag it onto your MP3 player and start listening!

Perhaps the cheapest mic widely used at LV is the Logitech USB desktop microphone (PN 980186-0403) for about $30US - very satisfactory for the price! Opinion: the sound is more digital and not so rich as the Samson mics ($50-90), but it's not so edgy or harsh as the headset models. A recommended first, economy mic.

The Logitech headsets are very widely used (especially the 250 for ~$40US; and the 350 for ~$50US; the models are proliferating). Some models are surprisingly uncomfortable to wear (the 250), but some folks like the headset convenience for keeping the mic location consistent and the hands free. Opinion: the sound is inferior to the cheaper, desk-top mic by Logitech. For the extra money, consider investing in a higher quality Samson mic.

When you have all your equipment and software set up, you are ready to start recording for real. These are the steps to take:

Read through the sub-fora in the section "Volunteers Wanted" to find a collaborative project that interests you. There are numerous collaborative projects open and looking for readers at any time of the day or night, in numerous languages:

Readers Wanted: Short Works and Poetry: this usually includes a Poetry Collection and a Short Story Collection, but also things like a Short Mystery Collection, Short Ghost Story Collection, Short Non-Fiction Collection, Long Poems Collection and many many more. For most of these collections, readers can pick a poem, story or essay of their own choice to contribute.

Readers Wanted: Books: whole books being recorded by multiple readers, where you can contribute one or more chapters.

Readers Wanted: Dramatic Works: plays or dramatic recordings of books, where you can contribute in the cast.

Carefully read the first post in the thread of the project that interests you - this contains all detailed instructions specific to this project, and shows you which sections or parts are still available.

Hit "Post Reply" at the top left of your screen. This will add a post to the 'thread.' Leave a message for the Book Coordinator indicating which part you'd like to read, and check back later for the reply. The Book Coordinator will leave a reply for you in the same manner, and tell you that you have successfully 'claimed' the part.

Please Note: It is recommended that you do not put any important information in the subject line of your reply to a post. You'll notice throughout the forum, that the subject line is so small that no one sees the subjects of individual replies. If, for example, you put the chapter number you would like to claim in the subject line, and not the post, your book coordinator will likely have no clue what you're talking about.

For many of the collections in the "Short Works" forum, you do not need to 'claim' anything. Just follow the instructions in the first post, and pick a poem, story or essay you like (as long as it's in the public domain).
Step 2. Now you can go and create your recording!
For detailed instructions, see HowToRecord. That page also contains information on how to edit your file after the recording. Hopefully you will now have a file that is ready for LibriVox. You'll need to go back to your project's intro post and ensure that the ID3 tags and the file name for the .mp3 file are all correct.
Step 3. Upload your recording

Step 4. Post your contribution
To let the book coordinator (BC) of your project know that your contribution is available, again hit "Post Reply" while you are in the project thread. Write the section number, the url (the one the uploader has given you), and the duration (in min:sec) and size (in MB) of your recording in your post. If it is your first contribution to Librivox, also include the name that you would like to show up in the catalogue.
Step 5. Edit after prooflistening
All recordings are "prooflistened" to catch repeats, big stumbles or long pauzes. For some specific projects, the recording is even checked against the text. The notes from the "proof-listener" will be posted in the project thread or in a specific prooflistening thread for the project. For more information, see GuidesforProoflisteners. Keep an eye on the status of your recording once in a while, in the "Magic Window" of your project.

If the prooflistener caught some mistakes, his/her notes will be entered here. Please edit your recording and resubmit the new version.

If the recording is marked "PL-OK" or just "OK", it means that it is all set for cataloging as soon as the whole project is done. No further action from you is required.
Once the project is complete, it will be catalogued. You may want to know what will happen to your file when you've sent it to your coordinator! Here's an overview of the LibriVox recording process and some other useful information.
How to get help
Contact your Coordinator via PM (private message, an option on the forum) or by posting a reply in your project's thread. Or post a message in the Need Help? forum and you'll be sure to get some advice!

VOLUNTEER
The greatest challenge is to get these books into audio format. Commercial companies are unwilling to spend the money to hire readers because the market for buying these audio books is small. The answer is to have these books read by volunteers. Reading are able to read one chapter or a whole book. Volunteers can be an editor, can work on the website or blog, find new books, listen to books, help others with problems or donate. See reading lab.
Project History
Back in 2000 I was an avid audio book listener. I had many doctrinal books that I wanted to read but it took me months, sometimes even years, to read some of these books. On the other hand I was listening to an audio book a week. I fell in love with books such as A Tale of Two Cities and Les Miserables. These were books that I would have never read because of my slow reading rate and lack of time.
I wanted to find religious books such as those on our list in audio format. I looked everywhere and they most did not exist. A few did, but their cost was very high. My wife even read The Teachings of Joseph Smith (which has since been recorded) onto cassette tapes. It is a cherished possession.
I was able to get a hold of several books in text format. I used a computer program to read the text and record the books to tapes. I quickly wore out a dozen players listening to books like the Mortal Messiah set and God, Family, and Country by President Ezra Taft Benson. These books opened my eyes and soul to very powerful truths that changed me. I can still remember the exact spots I was working when I learned different powerful truths.
I came to know and love these men who wrote these books. Audio books opened a whole new world to me that was miraculous. I want to pass this gift along to others like me that love God and His Prophets and desire to hear all their words.
